Wine has always been closely interwoven with the history of Cape Town and is an intrinsic part of the Mother City’s history and culture.
With over 600 wineries within an hour’s drive of the City, and many of the historic wine estates dating back to over 300 years, it’s no wonder that many wine related festivals and award ceremonies take place throughout the year in Cape Town and the surrounds.
Taj Cape Town has long been synonymous with fine food and vinous pleasure and it is for this reason that a number of Cape wine experiences and special offers have been crafted for locals and visitors alike who find themselves partial to the pleasures of wine.
Taj Classic Wine Trophy
The Taj Classic Wine Trophy Awards has been one of the highlights on the wine calendar for the past 16 years and Taj Cape Town has been a proud sponsor of the event since 2012. The annual event gathers a prestigious panel of French wine experts every March to taste the best wines that South Africa has to offer and reward them for their elegance, balance and finesse.
In 2014, six of the trophy winners were selected which presented the best overall value for readers of GQ South Africa and patrons of Taj Cape Town. These awarded wines will be showcased in GQ South Africa and served in the hotel over the month of July 2014. These include Chardonnays from Whalehaven, Chamonix and Groot Constantia as well as the Delaire Graff Botmaskop and Glen Carlou Grand Classique. A Whalehaven Merlot rounds out the list.
Big Bottle Wine Festival
The ever popular Big Bottle Wine festival will take place at Taj Cape Town from the 29 – 31 August 2014 with a cast of South Africa’s top winemakers and chefs assemble for this three day event.
Guests will have the rare opportunity to speak with the wine producers while sampling delectable canapés which have been created to accompany each specific wine.
The Pendock Wine Gallery
Showcasing the culture and craft of the local wine industry, The Pendock Wine Gallery is curated by renowned wine scribe, Neil Pendock, and comprises six installations throughout the year that each highlights a particular style of wine, a wine region, or wines from a specific winemaker.
The cost of R30 per person is refundable on purchase and includes a flight of six tastings amid the glamour of the hotels’ lobby.
The RECM Best Value Guide
Held every Wednesday in the Pendock Wine Gallery, between 50 and 100 wines are judged blind by a panel of wine judges earlier in the day. From 5-7pm, hotel guests and members of the public are then invited to sample all the wines that were judged earlier at a cost of only R100 per person.
Guests can experience a range of styles, all amid the intimate space of the Pendock Wine Gallery located in the lobby lounge.
