Get Pedalling at the Annual Cape Town Cycle Challenge

It’s that time of year again when we are all preparing for the annual Cape Town Cycle Tour (formerly known as the Cape Argus). Taking place on Sunday the 12th of March, this year marks the 40th anniversary of the cycle tour – the largest timed cycling event in the world, covering a magnificent 109km route. A massive group of 35 000 cyclists will wind their way through the mountainous backdrop with many raising funds for the Rotary Club of Claremont and the Pedal Power Association, amongst others.

The History of the Cape Town Cycle Tour

The Cape Town Cycle Tour was established in 1978 by the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, as a way to draw attention to the need for bicycle lanes in South Africa. It has since grown immensely to become one of the world’s most respected cycle tours, and it is even recognised in the International Cycling Union’s Golden Bike Series.

Get Involved in the Cape Town Cycle Tour

Applications for entry closed on the 23rd of August but there is no reason for cycling enthusiasts not to grab a seat and watch the event from one of the beautiful spectator spots. With six cut off times along the route, you can easily plan which of the 16 spots you would like to view the race from ahead of time.

Each of these areas have with their own charm and breath-taking view:

• The start, Hertzog Boulevard
• Newlands Forest Area
• Paradise Road (near Paradise Motors)
• Edinburgh Drive (top of Wynberg Hill – outbound)
• Main Road / Steenberg Road (Muizenberg)
• Kalk Bay and St. James
• Fish Hoek
• Glencairn Beach
• Simon’s Town Main Road
• Scarborough
• Noordhoek Farm Village
• Hout Bay (Corner Princess and Main / Chapman’s Peak Drive)
• Suikerbossie
• Camps Bay Beachfront
• Sea Point
• Promenade & finish line

A brief 10-minute drive from the Cape Town Cycle Tour start, and only 12 minutes from the finish line, Taj Cape Town makes choosing the perfect accommodation a cinch. The Taj is also the ideal resting place for exhausted cyclists and supporters alike – wind down with a spa treatment at the luxurious Jiva Spa, replenish your energy stores over a delicious meal at the Bombay Brasserie or Mint, the Local Grill and wash it all down with an artisanal cocktail at the Twankey Bar. To book your accommodation, phone +27 (0) 21 819 2000 or email sales.capetown@tajhotels.com.
