The Cape Town Carnival has grown to become a seminal event in the calendar of both Capetonians and tourists alike. This annual street parade is a celebration of Cape Town’s diversity and highlights the cultural melting pot that has welcomed people from different backgrounds for as long as this outpost has existed. Each year Green Point’s Fan Walk is filled with thousands of people joining the parade, watching as floats, musicians and performers pass by. You don’t want to miss the Cape Town Carnival!
When and Where is the Cape Town Carnival?
The 2017 Cape Town Carnival takes place on Saturday the 18th of March; it starts at 7pm and carries on until 1am. The procession starts at the top of Somerset Road in Green Point and ends where Somerset and York intersect. The Cape Town Carnival street party starts at 9:45pm and party goers can catch Oshri, Dj Fresh and Euphonik.
Do I Need to Buy a Ticket for the Cape Town Carnival?
General access is free but if you would like to take a load off and watch the procession from the comfort of a viewing stand you can buy a ticket for a mere R300. Those who would prefer a more exclusive experience, VIP tickets cost R1 300 and guarantee you a raised viewing platform, finger foods, a bar and a private DJ.
Everything is Better With a Theme
This year the carnival’s theme is “AMAZA! – Ocean Odyssey” a celebration of all things ocean related set to the backdrop of two mighty oceans – the Indian and the Atlantic – clashing in the middle of our very own Cape Town adventure.
The sunny seaside community of Cape Town is steeped in history bubbling with turbulence, adventure, treasure, exploration and magnificent wildlife. With so much inspiration to be drawn from this theme, the parade is set to be absolutely awe inspiring. Onlookers can enjoy the sight of over 2 000 performers and musicians as the Ocean Odyssey procession goes by.
