Raga Ecstasy: the Indian Classical Music Event of the Year

5th generation sitar artist Niladri Kumar, accompanied by the incredible tabla skills of Vijay Ghate, will enthral adoring fans in the Mother City this weekend with “Raga Ecstasy” a new concert guaranteed to establish the duo at the forefront of Indian Classical music.

Niladri Kumar – Master of Sitar

Those who have yet to discover the majestic sounds of Niladri Kumar’s sitar are in for a treat. It was at the age of four that Niladri first began playing the sitar. No surprise really as he is the product of five generations of sitar player. Niladri however is more than just a sitar player, he is an unconventional artist who imparts unique nuances on all his melodies.

Heralding a New Era for the Sitar

Instead of shifting between the sitar and the guitar, Niladri created the zitar. The combination guitar and sitar incorporates an electric pickup, a reduced number of strings and a rock sound to transcend the generational and cultural gaps between lovers of traditional Indian classical music, and those who enjoy more rock and lounge sounds.

For all his achievements Niladri Kumar has not only received many prestigious awards but also the recognition of critics, his contemporaries and the masses.

Tabla Phenomenon Vijay Ghate

Enter tabla phenomenon, Vijay Ghate and you have a fully fleshed out musical duo. Vijay learnt to play the tabla at the age of three and officially began his musical career at 16. He travelled the world with talented Indian musicians such as Bismillah Khan, Vilayat Khan, Hariprasad Chaurasia, Amjad Ali Khan, and many more.

International Collaboration

Vijay Ghate has the unique ability to accompany a variety of other musical genres. From dance music to instrumental music, his passion for this ancient percussion instrument shines through. So much so that he has successfully collaborated with the likes of Jethro Tull, George Duke, Al Jarreau, Ravi Coltrane, Egberto Gismonti, Larry Coryell, and George Brooks.
